FAQ's about wisdom teeth removal

Wisdom teeth pain is one of the most common dental emergencies that we deal with at Ultra Smiles Dental. Wisdom teeth can begin to grow from as early as 16 years of age and as they grow, they can cause pain around the back area of the mouth. About 4 out of 5 patients have their wisdom teeth removed, so it is a very common procedure. We recommend that you make an appointment every 6 months for your regular check-ups and clean, where we will also monitor the growth of your wisdom teeth and any impact it has on the rest of your teeth.

The majority of our patients will need to have their wisdom teeth removed because they do not have enough room in their jaws for the wisdom teeth to grow correctly. This leads to an impaction of the wisdom teeth with a neighbouring tooth, jaw bone or gums and creates an area that is impossible to clean, leading to an array of other oral health issues.

If you have any one of these issues due to an impacted wisdom tooth, then it is best to have your wisdom teeth to be removed:

  • Cysts developing around the wisdom teeth
  • Infection from the bacteria building up around impacted wisdom teeth
  • Damage to nearby teeth due to the eruption of mpacted wisdom teeth
  • If you have pain, swelling, or red inflamed gums around the wisdom teeth also known as pericoronoitis
  • If any odd metallic or bad taste develops
  • Your face or lymph nodes start to swell up or feel sore
  • if it becomes sore and difficult for you to open your mouth and the back
  • If you start getting a fever because of one of the above, and notice pus draining from the gumline

It is important to pick up on these signs as early as possible to avoid irreversible damage to your teeth or jaw structure. It is best to visit our team at Ultra Smiles Dulwich Hill as soon as you notice any of these signs so that we can help you treat it before it becomes a more serious problem.

All our patients will have some local anaesthesia and some may have additional nitrous oxide orIV Sedation. All these tools, along with our dentists’ experienced and gentle approach, will mitigate any pain you will feel during and after the procedure. We also will provide you with pain relief medication or prescription, as appropriate, after procedure is completed so that you will leave our clinic with minimal discomfort.

The cost of removing a wisdom tooth can range from $200 – $500 per tooth, depending on the your individual circumstances and the difficulty of the procedure. If there is more surgical involvement required (and so more time and tools required), this increases the costs of the procedure. As our dentists are very experienced, they are able to minimise the amount of surgery needed in most cases and in order to keep the costs down for you. Come in for a consultation and we can give you an accurate quote and assessment of the wisdom teeth!
